Red Hill Man Faces Burglary, Theft Charges
Written by Kelly Chandler Staff Writer
2015-08-26

A Red Hill man is facing felony charges after he reportedly burglarized a Pennsburg business and was found in possession of stolen drugs after multiple confrontations with law enforcement Aug. 18.

According to court documents filed by Upper Perk Police, Joseph A. Zappo, 21, of the 300 block of W. 3rd St., was charged with burglary and two counts of criminal trespass, felonies, along with two counts each of theft, defiant trespass, drug possession, public drunkenness and disorderly conduct as well as receiving stolen property and criminal mischief.

In court papers, police said Zappo was employed at a State Street, East Greenville business when he was allegedly found there Aug. 18 rummaging through lockers hours after he said he had to leave work early.  Police said money was reported missing from one of the lockers and when Zappo was confronted about still being on the property, he reportedly became disruptive and was yelling obscenities at multiple employees.

After leaving the scene for about two hours, police said Zappo returned and was again found going through employee lockers.  He was belligerent, police said, and only left when escorted by authorities.  Police said Zappo was later fired and was warned by police and the business manager that if he returned he would be trespassing.

About two hours later, police were called to the business because Zappo was reportedly walking up and down the street at the location cursing at vehicles and employees.  Authorities said Zappo appeared under the influence of a controlled substance and was arrested.  He was released to a family member around 10 p.m., police said.

At the time of his arrest, Zappo was reportedly found in possession of a prescription bottle of narcotics, which police allege he stole from an East Greenville woman.

Upper Perk Police were dispatched for a burglary alarm at Valley Beverage, 680 Main Street in Pennsburg around 11 p.m.  Authorities said Zappo, who was found in an adjacent parking lot, was detained but denied any knowledge of the break-in.  He was found with bloody clothing and a cut finger, police said.

Authorities, who found a broken window to the business and blood evidence, said Zappo was seen on video surveillance wandering around inside the building.  A broken beer bottle was also found on the floor.  Police estimated damages around $500 to the business.  Blood evidence was collected from the scene and Zappo was arrested.

Zappo was arraigned by Judge Catherine Hummel Fried of Red Hill District Court last week, who set bail at $25,000 unsecured.  He was released and is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing at Sept. 8 at 1:15 p.m.
