Upper Perk Police have charged a Pennsburg man with multiple felonies after he allegedly broke into two area homes and stole a car in May of this year. He also stands accused of three other burglaries and a retail theft in Bucks and Montgomery counties that same month.
According to court records, Ian Dougherty, 34, of the 1200 block of Quakertown Avenue, was arraigned on charges of criminal trespassing, theft, receiving stolen property, defiant trespass, possession of an instrument of crime, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and criminal mischief in Red Hill District Court Aug. 13.
According to court documents filed by Upper Perk Police in the case, Dougherty is accused of breaking into a home in the 400 block of Macoby Street in Pennsburg on May 8 around 4 p.m. Police said Dougherty used a liquid propane tank on the property's porch to break a basement window of the home. Once inside, he allegedly stole $500 in cash from the bedroom, along with numerous pieces of jewelry before taking the keys to the couple's green 2007 Pontiac G6 and fleeing the scene.
Police said there were three witnesses to the crime, who provided police with a description of Dougherty. He was later positively identified in a photo lineup as the individual at the scene of the burglary.
The stolen vehicle was found around 11 p.m. that night in the parking lot of Home City Ice, 131 Washington Street, East Greenville, about a mile away from the burglary scene. It was towed back to Upper Perk Police headquarters where it was processed by PA State Police's crime scene unit, authorities said.
A witness also reportedly saw a man running from the parking lot between 4 and 5 p.m. toward Dougherty's home.
On May 17 around 5 p.m., Upper Perk Police were called to a burglary in the 400 block of Washington Street in East Greenville. Authorities said a screen was removed from a window in the rear of the home and two glass coin jars were taken from inside. Reports stated the burglar overlooked a flatscreen TV, two handguns, two safes, a lock box and numerous bank envelopes that all contained cash.
Police alleged, through an investigation that included surveillance footage from area businesses, and cell phone records in the name of Doug Herty (Dougherty), Dougherty broke into the East Greenville home and stole the coins, worth approximately $800. He allegedly placed them in a backpack and rode home on a bike with the coins.
The coins were cashed in at a Coinstar machine in Quakertown, where Dougherty presented his PA driver's license.
He was arraigned by Judge Catherine Hummel Fried and was taken to Montgomery County Correctional Facility in lieu of $25,000 cash bail. He is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing in Red Hill District Court Aug. 20 at 2:15 p.m.
According to court records, Dougherty was paroled from prison in April after pleading guilty to burglary and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle charges stemming from cases in Bucks County in 2013. He is currently incarcerated in Bucks County jail, court records say, on burglary charges from Bensalem, Lower Moreland and Buckingham townships.
