The Upper Perkiomen Youth Legion Prep team ended their regular season on a high note last Sunday afternoon as they easily defeated Southern Lehigh by a score of 13-3. The win allowed the team to finish with a 12-12 record in MBC League play, and will send them into the league's playoff tournament as the number-five seed.
Upper Perk scored all the runs they would need in the bottom of the first inning. Matt Reinhart got things started with a base hit, and before the visitors could record an out, six straight Warriors singled. The offensive explosion would lead to five runs and squashed any hopes the visitors had of going home with a win.
The Warriors' pitching trio of Alex Boldizar, Chase Ziegler and Drake Conklin faced little resistance from opposing hitters, as they allowed only two hits and three runs in their combined efforts on the mound.
After Southern Lehigh plated a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning that made the score 8-3, the Upper Perkiomen offense went on the attack again. Ziegler and Tim Landis each reached base to open the inning. Alec Fitzgerald, Levi Gehman and Bobby Lynch each singled. After David Kilroy and Conklin walked, Drew Kupchak ended the game with a sacrifice fly to center field that plated Lynch with the game winner.
"The boys played really well today," said Warriors head coach Doug Crossin after the game. "It was a good way to end the regular season going out with a win. It was really nice to see the offense have a good game. We will need to carry that over into the playoffs."
Asked what he thought he could expect from his club once tournament play begins, Crossin was optimistic about his squads chances.
"I honestly think we can make a little noise. I think we're a little better than our record might suggest. Twenty four games is a demanding schedule, and with all the rescheduling because of the rain it was a little tough some nights to play at the level I believe we're capable of. We will need to be consistent on offense, and take advantage of our opportunities. I feel like we have the pitching to compete with anybody in the league. There are probably six boys on the team who can legitimately pitch at this level, and a deep pitching staff in tournament play can be a big advantage. If we throw strikes we should have a chance in every game we play.
The coaches have done a great job with the boys, they really put in a lot of work and I think all the players have learned a lot this year."
Unfortunately, the Warriors lost their opening round game to Phoenixville by a score of 8-3. In an elimination game that was played too late for this edition, they hosted Southern Lehigh at home last night. A win in that game and the team will play tonight with an opponent that is yet to be determined.
