Three Medevaced From Head-On UTV Collision
Written by Kelly Chandler Staff Writer
2015-07-08

A father and son from Upper Hanover Township, along with a family friend, were flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital – Cedar Crest after their UTVs (utility terrain vehicles) crashed head-on at their property in the 2500 block of Geryville Pike July 2.

State police, Skippack barracks, said around 8 p.m. they received a call for the collision which occurred about one-quarter mile off the road in the woods.

According to emergency personnel, the accident scene was hard to take in.  The two male drivers, identified as Tom Frederick, 41, and Justin Frederick, 20, were both ejected from their vehicles and sustained serious injuries.  Catherine Stoll, 21, of Pennsburg, a passenger in Tom Frederick's vehicle, was also injured.

At least one of the men had to be extricated from the wreckage.

"It was pretty gruesome.  I've been doing this for 30-some years and it was one of the worst I've seen," said Harry Gillmer, deputy chief of Red Hill Fire Company.

Brandon Frederick, son and brother to the victims, said his father sustained a compound fracture to his femur, a broken wrist, arm and nose and had a deep laceration above his eye.  His brother suffered a skull fracture, bleeding on the brain, serious neck injury, three broken ribs, a broken leg, and a shattered hip and knee, among other injuries.

Stoll, a friend of Brandon Frederick's, suffered a concussion and laceration to her knee, he said.

The younger Frederick said the whole accident happened so fast but was due to a lack of communication.

"My dad was taking my friend for a quick ride and no one knew my brother went out on his [UTV]," he said, noting emergency responders did a good job taking care of everyone.

After being flown to Lehigh Valley, Stoll was treated and released but both men were admitted in critical condition; Justin to the intensive care unit (ICU) and his dad to the trauma ward.  They both required multiple reconstructive surgeries to date and Justin remains in the ICU, his brother said earlier this week.

Tom Frederick is expected to be discharged and begin rehab this week.  Doctors have estimated he will be out of work for at least six months, the family said.  Justin is expected to be hospitalized longer, according to his brother.

Both men work for Advanced Door Services in Hatfield.

Red Hill Fire Chief Scott Alderfer said PA State Police, Green Lane, Pennsburg and Milford fire companies assisted at the accident site, as well as Upper Perkiomen, Harleysville and Plymouth ambulance companies and VFMC, Lansdale Volunteer Medical Service.

A fundraising page has been set up to help defray the family's expenses.  For more information, visit gofundme.com/tjfrederick.
