Two people were taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital for injuries after a van crashed into a school bus on Layfield Road/Route 663 in Upper Hanover Township Monday.
Around 4:21 p.m., authorities said the bus, which was carrying students northbound, was waiting to turn left onto Klinerd Road when a white van, also northbound, failed to stop and crashed into the rear of the bus.
Pennsburg Fire Chief Scott Seip said two students were on the bus at the time of the accident and both were unhurt. Those students were later taken home by their parents, authorities said.
The bus driver was transported to the hospital for back and neck pain, Seip said. The driver of the van, who had to be extricated by Pennsburg fire personnel, was also taken to the hospital for injuries to his chest and lower extremities, authorities reported.
That extrication took more than 30 minutes, authorities said, in order to free the man from the crumpled metal which trapped him inside.
The bus driver, who wasn't identified, was later released from the hospital, according to Peg MacLean, general manager of Coventry Transportation, who said the woman is recuperating.
Pennsburg Fire Company and fire police assisted at the scene, along with Red Hill and Hereford fire police, East Greenville Fire Company and Upper Perk and Gilbertsville EMS. A MedEvac helicopter was flown in from Limerick but wasn't needed at the scene after assessment, according to authorities.
A state police report on the accident was unavailable as of press time Wednesday.
