Two weeks ago this newspaper reported that the position of school board member for the Upper Perkiomen School District was lacking candidates for next week's primary election. Five seats are up for election and there were only two candidates; both incumbents.
Last week we opined on the possible reasons for the lack of candidates.
With three open seats in election-limbo, four local residents have now stepped forward to throw their hats in the ring. It is encouraging to see folks willing to step up to the plate and offer their services in a time of need.
These write-in candidates took advantage of the Town and Country's offer of publicizing their candidacy in our Primary Election Guide on pages 25 through 32 in this week's edition.
Please read their information and give it serious consideration; as you would to any candidate. These are people with varying levels of experience, education and history, but all share the same desire and grit to step forward and offer themselves to their community and its students.
Rumor has it that there may be more potential write-in candidates offering their candidacy at various polling locations on Tuesday – that's good too.
When writing in votes, spelling is important and we suggest that if you plan on voting for any of the write-in candidates presented in the Primary Election Guide, take it with you into the voting booth so you can key or write in the name correctly.
Write-in votes take a little longer for officials to verify and spelling or the use of nicknames or abbreviated names could have an effect on whether or not your vote is counted. Don't let that happen. If you have any questions on how to vote for a write-in candidate, ask someone before you enter the voting booth.
Nobody ever said it would be easy, but next Tuesday those write-in candidates will be popular in the eyes of many because they decided that the Primary Election for the position of School Board Director in the Upper Perkiomen School District wasn't going to end with three open seats.
