A fast-moving field fire spread through two acres of brush and woods at Perkiomen Heights on Monday.
The heavy white smoke was spotted rising from the area of the 2000 block of Kutztown Road in Upper Hanover Township around 2:15 p.m. by a motorist passing through the intersection of 11th and Main streets in Red Hill.
Driving about 2 miles to the area where the smoke was rising from, the passerby found about 1 acre already burning with some flames reaching as high as eight feet, and no sight of anyone in the area, according to the man's accounts to the Town and Country. The fire was also approaching a nearby garage and spreading quickly each time the wind shifted, he said.
After calling 911, the Good Samaritan, who asked not to be identified, said he saw the homeowner lying on the ground through the smoke about 40 feet away. The victim was 10 feet away from the burning brush, according to the man. After checking on the victim, he called 911 again, letting the emergency responders know of the injured man.
The victim, identified as William Kitchen, suffered cuts and bruises on his arms and legs. Kitchen reportedly fell and was unable to get up. He reported that he sustained his injuries while crawling through the brush, away from the fire. He was transported to St. Luke's Hospital, Quakertown. His condition was not known as of press time.
According to Pennsburg Fire Chief Scott Seip, the fire was started when wind carried embers and flames into the brush from a controlled fire.
Firefighters had the fire under control by 3 p.m.
Montgomery County units assisting at scene responded from East Greenville, New Hanover, and Upper Frederick fire companies.
Assisting from Berks County were units from Eastern Berks and Hereford fire companies; from Bucks County, Milford Township and Trumbauersville fire companies.
Emergency medical service units responded from the Upper Perkiomen Valley and Harleysville Community ambulance associations.
