A Pennsburg man was arrested last week on multiple charges after Upper Perk Police said he tried to strangle his girlfriend and her daughter and then went after police.
Danny L. Shaffer, of the 400 block of Penn Street, was arrested on charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, simple assault, unlawful restraint, false imprisonment and resisting arrest Jan. 8, according to police.
Court documents state Shaffer, 31, was involved in a domestic dispute with his girlfriend at the location around 1:30 a.m. when the argument escalated. Police said Shaffer pinned the woman to the floor and started strangling her. The woman's adult daughter repeatedly hit Shaffer, according to court papers, and began yelling at him to let her mother go.
Shaffer then allegedly grabbed the daughter and put her in a choke hold. While she was gasping for air, he hit her in the head several times with his fist, a criminal complaint states. The woman's mother eventually got Shaffer to release her daughter, police said.
After police were called to the location, and arrested Shaffer, they said his girlfriend attempted to keep authorities from taking him out of the home. She reportedly blocked the path of the arresting officer, and despite several attempts by police to get her to move, authorities said she began to get aggressive.
Police said she put her hands on the Upper Perk officer and a "violent struggle" ensued with another officer who was assisting. As that officer attempted to get the woman under control, police said Shaffer lunged at him, while in handcuffs, and then knocked over the arresting officer with a shoulder to the midsection.
After a scuffle, the arresting officer got Shaffer out of the home and into a patrol car and his girlfriend was also secured, police said. Shaffer exhibited signs of being highly intoxicated, police said, and a preliminary breath test reportedly detected the presence of alcohol.
Shaffer was arraigned on Jan. 8 by District Judge Catherine Hummel-Fried of Red Hill District Court, who set bail at $10,000 secured. Court personnel said Shaffer is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing Jan. 20 at 1:30 p.m. in Red Hill.
Upper Perk Police said summary charges of resisting arrest and obstruction of justice are pending against Shaffer's girlfriend.
