National Newspaper Week
2019-09-24

National Newspaper Week (NNW) is October 6 – 12, 2019, it is sponsored by the Newspaper Association Managers, Inc., the consortium of North American trade associations representing the industry on a state and provincial, regional and national basis.

This year's NNW theme is "Think F1rst – Know Your 5 Freedoms." The theme focuses on the five freedoms – freedom of press, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to assemble peacefully and freedom to petition the government – collectively known as the First Amendment.

This 79th annual National Newspaper Week is a recognition of the service of newspapers and their employees across North America.   The annual celebration marks the impact of newspapers in their communities and is sponsored by Newspaper Association Managers.

Today, many newspapers are ditching the imposing buildings for low-rent storefronts and have outsourced the printing.  Those would be the newspapers that are left.

Youngstown, Ohio just became the first major American city without any newspaper at all.  As University of North Carolina professor Penny Abernathy has documented in her groundbreaking research on the news desertification of America, upwards of 1,300 communities that had newspapers of their own in 2004 now have none.

The temptation to spend National Newspaper Week crying in our beers would be wasted.

Real newshounds don't wallow in the cozy memories of a sepia-stained past. We are about the now and the next. The job has always been to help our communities recognize challenges of today and hope that readers will turn them into the tomorrow's promise.

This is your story too: The future of democracy is inextricably bound up with the future of a free press.
