Fire Damages Hereford Post Office
Written by Larry Roeder, Editor

Volunteer firefighters from Hereford Fire Company were called to a blaze that damaged the Hereford Post Office, 43 Star Road, on Christmas Day.

Emergency dispatchers received a 911 call from an employee of the Turkey Hill Minit Market around 12:50.  The Market is adjacent to the post office.

According to Hereford Fire Chief Josh Borowski, when firefighters arrived they "found heavy fire in the loading dock area" that had spread to the roof of the building.

Wind swept flames leaped 50-feet above the building as fire firefighters quickly battled the fire in temperatures that hovered around freezing.  Most of the damage was confined to the roof area.  In addition to using water from their trucks, water was supplied from a hydrant near the intersection of Seisholtzville Road and State Street.

The post office suffered fire, smoke and water damage but, according to reports, no mail was damaged.  A firewall kept the fire from spreading to the market.

The southbound lane of Route 100 (State Street) was closed while firefighters battled the fire.

The fire was declared under control at 1:20 p.m.  No injuries were reported.

According to Borowski, both tenants will be closed until the roof is repaired and inspected.  Both share an electrical connection.

Borowski estimated the damage to be at least $150,000 to the building and at least $30,000 to the contents.  He commended all firefighters for their efforts to contain the blaze and minimize damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Police Fire Marshall and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.

Assisting the Hereford fire company were units and fire police from East Greenville, Eastern Berks, Pennsburg, Seisholtzville, and Upper Milford fire companies.

Firefighters cleared the scene around 4:15 p.m.

Operations at the Hereford Post Office have been suspended.  Customers who have post office boxes in Hereford will have to pick up their mail at the Palm Post Office.  Mail carriers, working out of another post office, will continue with delivery to addresses of customers with street delivery.
