Judge Recuses Himself from Ziegler case
Written by Bradley Schlegel, Correspondent
2014-09-12

Preliminary hearing against Douglass (Mont.) Township supervisor continued

The recusal of District Judge Maurice Saylor from the case against the Douglass (Mont.) Township supervisor accused of stealing municipal property for his own personal use has led to a delay in the proceedings.

Saylor's decision to withdraw from the case against Frederick W. Ziegler has led to a continuance of the preliminary hearing, originally scheduled for Friday at 10 a.m. at the New Hanover court, according to a court employee.  Another district judge will be assigned to the case, according to the same female employee.

Reached Thursday, the woman did not provide a reason for Saylor's recusal. She said the office was waiting for the hearing to be assigned to another court.

Ziegler, 61, faces eight felony counts and 14 misdemeanor counts from multiple alleged criminal incidents during a 15-month period, according to charges filed Sept. 2 by the Pennsylvania Attorney General.

Authorities allege that Ziegler stole a chainsaw purchased with township funds, made four unauthorized purchases with the municipal gas card, took a 100-pound propane tank and used plywood purchased with township money for yard signs for his reelection campaign.

John Flannery, a senior deputy in the Attorney General's criminal prosecutions section, will prosecute the case.
