Sept. 11, 2001 to Be Remembered at American Legion Post #184 Memorial
Written by Larry Roeder, Editor
The Sons of the American Legion Squadron #184, along with the American Legion Post #184 family, will host a remembrance service at the site of their 9-11 Memorial, 744 Gravel Pike in Palm, PA. The service will start at 6:30 p.m. tonight and the public is invited.
Many of the area fire companies are planning to attend.
The memorial, dedicated on Nov. 13, 2011, features a large, blue-colored base in the shape of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with a white star signifying the location of Shanksville, PA, the site of the crash of United Airlines Flight 93. Two statues in the shape of Manhattan's Twin Towers at the World Trade Center complex sit upon the Pennsylvania base. American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 were crashed into the buildings on Sept. 11.
A 13-foot, 6,400 pound section of steel salvaged from the World Trade Center site sits in the middle of the memorial atop a base in the shape of Washington D.C.'s Pentagon – the site of American Airlines Flight 77 crash. More than 3,000 people died in the worst attack on United States soil on Sept. 11, 2001.
The large section of steel was delivered to the Palm location from Newark, NJ as part of the 100-mile trip known as the "Iron Run" that featured more than 3,000 motorcycles and was led by Engine 911 – a truck once owned by New York firefighter Eric Olsen. The 42-year-old firefighter was killed in the North Tower of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.  Engine 911 will be on display at tonight's memorial service.
More than a thousand onlookers, from the overpasses in New Jersey through the streets of the Upper Perkiomen Valley, waved American flags and cheered as the iconic steel made the trip.
The steel has become part of a permanent memorial on the grounds of Post 184.
